5 Tips to Boost
Your Child's Reading Skills

1.  Increase Phonemic Awareness

Encourage your child to listen to and hear the individual sounds in words.  Then ask your child to pronounce each sound in the word and say the number of sounds.  For example, dog has 3 sounds, /d/  /o/  /g/.

3.  Ramp Up Reading Fluency

Ask your child to smoothly read a sentence, one word after another, without stopping until the period.

2.  Phonics

Show your child that each letter is associated with a sound.  Have your child read the letter sounds.  For example, B says "b" and M says "m".  You can use games like "The Name Game" or "I Spy" to do this.

4. Broaden His Vocabulary

Explore new and unfamiliar words when reading books together.  Tell your child how to pronounce words, what words mean, and how words are used.  Encourage your child to use at least one new word a day.

5.  Amp Up Comprehension

Ask your child questions during and after reading.  Examples:  "Who is the character?"  "What is the setting?" " What did you learn?"  "What was the problem and solution?"  "What was your favorite part?"
